In London and many parts of Europe, it isn’t so easy for an infertile woman to obtain an egg,  as donors are legally only allowed to be compensated for a small amount per month and the amount of people who donate is limited. Therefore, many infertile European women come to America to pay for eggs.

But, the latest “contest” started by an American clinic has the UK up in arms. The Genetics and IVF Institute in Virginia awarded one British couple who attended their seminar in the UK free eggs from an American woman in an effort to boost business in the country, a prize worth $10,000.

“There’s something shocking in the association of a raffle and giving away a human product,” said Dr. Francoise Shenfield from University College, London. “In Europe, we have the general idea that altruism is a good thing, and we don’t want to turn human body parts into a commodity.” (Huffington Post)
